Advances in AI and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have made it possible to decode continuous language and semantic content from brain activity. This includes not only basic words or phrases, but also the entire meaning of a sentence. Furthermore, a study has shown that the same model used for fMRI decoding can also be applied to functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), which is a more portable and noninvasive method. However, concerns about mental privacy and the ability to employ countermeasures have been raised. While the study found that decoding brain activity from one person to another is unlikely and countermeasures can be used, the implications for voluntary use of mind reading technology remain uncertain.
