Light and lack of sleep, effect on glucose and health

Shift workers often struggle to participate in trials and interventions due to the disruption of their body and mind caused by their work schedule. Sleep extension, physical activity, and nutrition interventions are challenging for shift workers due to the demands of their job and lack of energy. Even just a few nights of sleep deprivation and limited sleep can lead to elevated blood glucose levels, resembling pre-diabetes. Even dim light present in the room during sleep can disrupt morning blood glucose levels. These effects are reversible. Shift work extends beyond traditional night shift jobs, with a significant number of people functioning as shift workers due to engaging in activities at night. If we combine traditional shift workers and those who function as shift workers due to nighttime activities, approximately half of Americans could be classified as shift workers. Sleep patterns of high school and college students show late bedtimes, with only a small fraction going to bed before midnight.
