The Singularity Is Coming?

The singularity is a matter of progress. As long as we continue to make progress, the singularity will come. Two assumptions need to be made: substrate independence and ongoing progress. There is no reason why the singularity cannot be achieved in silico. It is scientifically plausible to believe that building intelligent machines does not require the wetware of our own brains. Eventually, these machines will surpass human competence. Leaving consciousness aside, the encounter with superintelligent machines is comparable to aliens landing. It is hard to imagine maintaining a slavish devotion to humans in these systems if intelligence scales and builds upon itself.
