The Five Levels of Motivation

Fear, guilt, shame, anger, and rage can motivate, but they leave a toxic residue. Extrinsic rewards like money and fame motivate, but also leave a toxic residue and create a win-lose mentality. Intrinsic rewards, such as living from a sense of purpose or calling, motivate without leaving a toxic residue. Play is the highest level of motivation, and all mammals are motivated by food, play, and learning.
