The Dopamine and Social Media

Social media initially provides a dopamine hit due to the novelty and excitement it brings. However, as we continue to scroll, it can transition into obsessive-compulsive behavior, driven by the intermittent random rewards provided by algorithms. This behavior is similar to addiction or OCD, where the compulsion to scroll only increases the obsession. Social media mimics the effects of gambling, as we constantly seek the next dopamine hit. Just like an animal experiment, constantly seeking rewards is seen as a sick behavior. It is important to self-regulate our time on social media and view time away from it as a positive reinforcement. Taking breaks and missing someone can enhance the experience and make it more rewarding when we return.
