Technology Alone Cannot Simplify the Complexity of Democratic Engagement
The impact of technology on democratic engagement is limited, as it cannot address the inherent complexities of the decision-making process. Simplifying democracy through increased voting opportunities often results in a paradox where the burden on individuals becomes overwhelming, leading to lower participation rates. This creates a vacuum that interest groups can exploit, undermining genuine democratic engagement. The core challenge lies in the acquisition and analysis of information rather than the act of voting itself. While technology may provide access to data, it does not equip individuals with the skills required to interpret and apply that information effectively. Therefore, successful democratic models should move beyond direct democracy to incorporate systems that can manage this complexity, as evidenced by the adoption of representative democracy in many decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs).
