S2 Ep.16 Jabe Bloom – Platforming inside and between organizations: differentiation, scale, and scope
Boundaryless Conversations Podcast
Digital commons & platforms gain value with use, but dogmatic decentralisation isn’t the way to build & manage them
The existing institutions are constrained by their own affordances and need more institutional innovation. Decentralising decision-making without decentralising information and the ability to make decisions leads to problems. Negotiation, rather than decision-making, should be decentralised to create common goods with deferred value creation. Organisations need to develop methods for working together to create and manage common goods. Many organisations mismanage resources that would be better held and managed in a common way. Digital platforms should focus on creating components of shared value that accelerate value creation. Platforms that don't listen to local concerns or attempt to force themselves into different societies struggle. Interactions between multiple product teams and platform teams are complex and require different methods of working. Organisations need to create conditions for practicing platform engagement. Embracing self-organising systems challenges the idea of a company enacting a strategy.
