The political system needs better governance and decision-making. There are too many politicians who are experts at getting elected but not necessarily good leaders or decision-makers. The system should require politicians to demonstrate an ability to perform and make good decisions at lower-level offices before running for higher office. A negative contrarian role, like the Roman censors, could be implemented to review and critique politicians' decisions. It is important to have multi-disciplinary experts and generalists in decision-making positions to provide guidance and avoid over-specialization. Education should focus on critical thinking and producing wide boundary thinkers. Universities should encourage undergraduates to take courses outside their field to gain a broad understanding. This holistic approach is vital for the future of governance.
On this episode we meet with risk expert and consultant, Chuck Watson.
Watson analyzes the types of risk we face in the modern world - from climate change to nuclear arms - and how the decisions of experts help us from plunging into the abyss. How do humans manage our instincts to over-react to risks we recently experienced with high-consequence, low-probability situations?
Further, Watson explores the role of human agency in risk analysis. How are humans smart enough to build dangerous systems, but unable to manage the same systems? He looks at how building stronger governance systems will allow humans to overcome our current predicament.
