Socially, we are conditioned to focus on external multiplayer competitive games, such as looking good or making money. However, true happiness and personal growth are internal and have no external validation. Life is a single player game, where we compete against ourselves. We are social creatures who are driven to compete externally, but the reality is that we are born alone, die alone, and all our interpretations and memories are unique to us. In the end, no one cares about us beyond a few generations. Warren Buffett's example of being the best lover but being known as the worst highlights the importance of inner self-score over external validation.

Naval Ravikant is the CEO and co-founder of AngelList. He’s invested in more than 100 companies, including Uber, Twitter, Yammer, and many others.
