Give people affirmation who don't expect you to do so

Affirmation from someone who is different can have a powerful impact. A teacher's belief in a student's abilities can plant a seed of potential. The impact of affirmation can be even greater when it comes from someone who doesn't necessarily identify with the student's race or ethnicity.
