40 Minutes In The Old Testament
The Blood of Abel
Abel's blood, which cried out to the heavens, is not seeking vengeance but rather crying for mercy and clemency. This aligns with Abel's character as a righteous son of God who lived by faith. The verse in Hebrews 12 states that the sprinkled blood of Jesus speaks a better word than the blood of Abel, indicating superiority but not contradiction. This concept of insufficiency and waiting for perfection is consistent throughout the Book of Hebrews. Therefore, it is believed that Abel's blood cries out for God's compassion, grace, and mercy towards his brother instead of seeking vengeance. This cry for mercy is in line with the attitude of Christ and parallels Stephen's cry for forgiveness while being martyred in Acts chapter 7. Ultimately, Abel's plea for mercy is heard by God, even in death.
