Technological Innovation and Job Creation

Disruptive technological innovations have historically not led to job losses but have instead increased capacity. For example, the introduction of bank ATM machines in the 70s did not result in job loss for bank tellers but rather led to a significant decrease in branch operation costs and the creation of more branches. Similarly, automation in trucking will likely increase the volume of trucking activities due to the current shortage of drivers. Countries with high levels of robotics penetration, such as South Korea, Sweden, and Germany, have low unemployment rates. Thus, instead of focusing on job losses, we should acknowledge that automation generally boosts capacity and can lead to job creation and abundance.
