*The Importance of Ending on Cold - The Sobering Principle or "After Drop" *

The after drop is when your core temperature decreases after getting out of cold water. When you enter cold water, your blood vessels constrict to keep blood in your core and vital organs warm. When you get out, the blood vessels open and warm blood flows out to the surface, but it cools down and returns to the core, causing a decrease in core temperature. This drop induces shivering, which activates brown fat to warm up the body. The sobering principle, also known as ending on cold, is important for maintaining the benefits of cold exposure, as opposed to using hot showers or saunas.
