The Impact of Alcohol on Memory

Alcohol disrupts dream sleep and blocks REM sleep due to aldehydes. REM sleep is associated with creative memory. A study showed that alcohol on the first night after learning led to more than a 50% loss of memory on day seven. Even alcohol on the third night after learning caused about a 40% deficit in memory. This suggests that the sleeping brain continues to process and consolidate information for at least three days after learning.
