Can You Only Get Better by Talking to Native Speakers?

Many people believe that the only way to improve in a language is by talking to native speakers, thinking that they can absorb the language automatically. However, this is not true. Even people who have been living in a country for a long time can still make obvious mistakes and show gaps in grammar. To truly reach native speaker level, one must make a conscious effort to learn the language rules. Native speaker children also go to school and are taught the rules of the language. They are corrected and taught the language all day long, showing that language is not instinctively learned through listening alone.
