Approaching the First 90 Days as a Product Manager
Approaching the first 90 days as a product manager involves focusing on the role of a product manager and developing long-term habits rather than just creating a good first impression. One concrete recommendation is to start using your own product deeply in the first 30 days, as this will create a positive impression among peers. Building relationships is also important, and conducting one-on-one meetings with team members is recommended. However, it's crucial to approach these meetings with genuine interest in the other person, their work, and their perspective, rather than overwhelming them with tasks. Additionally, it is valuable to meet with top performers in the organization to understand what success looks like and gain insights on common patterns. Taking a longer-term perspective and authentically focusing on effectiveness at the company will lead to identifying meaningful tasks to accomplish in the first 30 or 90 days, such as observing customer or sales meetings or getting involved in the interview process.
