Dynamic speakers who are engaging and interesting tend to minimize their use of filler words, such as 'um' and 'uh', compared to speakers with a monotonous and boring delivery. The perception of the audience is influenced by both the content of the speech and the speaker's delivery style. Speakers who have rehearsed and show a strong command of their content are more preferred than those who struggle with filler words.

Valerie Fridland is a sociolinguist, Professor of Linguistics at the University of Nevada, a researcher and an author.
