Ancestors lived in an immediate return environment where decisions that impacted survival had quick payoffs. However, modern society, developed in the last 500 years or so, favors delayed gratification. Structures like working today for a paycheck in two weeks or studying today to graduate in four years reward patience. Yet, our paleolithic hardware still seeks instant gratification, creating a mismatch between our evolutionary instincts and modern society.
