There is controversy surrounding unprocessed red meat due to cultural attachment to eating red meat, enjoyment of it, influence from the meat industry, push from academic studies funded by the industry, influence from the meat lobby, and studies that have not done substitution analysis. When comparing red meat with the average American diet, it may not be much worse, but when compared with plant protein sources like nuts, legumes, and soy, red meat elevates LDL cholesterol and is associated with higher risks of heart disease and diabetes.
