Breaking Through When You Feel Stuck
HBR IdeaCast
*Strategies for Exploring and Pushing Through Stickiness in the workplace *
There are two strategies to find good things: exploration and exploitation. In the exploration phase, individuals should try different approaches and techniques to cover as much ground as possible. However, exploration cannot last forever. Once something that works is found, individuals should transition into the exploitation phase, where they focus on that one thing and say no to everything else unless it serves the chosen path. Managers should convey the importance of both exploration and exploitation to their team members. When individuals are on a hot streak and everything is going well, they should focus on exploiting that success and not divert their attention elsewhere. However, if the success starts to plateau, it might be time to go back to exploring. The key is to find a balance between exploration and exploitation throughout one's career.
