*Bipolar 1 is >=1 manic episode over 7 days. Bipolar 2 is shorter time of mania, 4 days, but also ANY depression *
Bipolar disorders are classified into three basic types: Bipolar 1 disorder, Bipolar 2 disorder, and cyclothymia. Bipolar 1 is diagnosed when an individual has experienced at least one manic episode lasting a minimum of seven days, although hospitalization can interrupt this period. Conversely, Bipolar 2 requires at least one hypomanic episode with symptoms present for at least four days. Bipolar 2 is not simply a milder form of Bipolar 1; instead, it presents different characteristics and may have less severe consequences than Bipolar 1. The distinctions between these types emphasize the variation in the duration and intensity of mood episodes.
