The most common mistake is the belief that external circumstances will bring happiness and joy. This mistaken notion leads to seeking fulfillment in material possessions or achievements. However, this external focus is delusional. While it is important to take action and pursue goals, expecting them to bring lasting happiness is a fundamental mistake. True happiness does not come from outside sources but from within. It is a misconception that constantly plagues humanity, including the speaker who admits to being caught in the cycle of desiring external things for happiness. The repetition of this mistake is to always think that acquiring something will bring happiness, when in reality, it never does.

Naval Ravikant is the CEO and co-founder of AngelList. He’s invested in more than 100 companies, including Uber, Twitter, Yammer, and many others.
