In relationships, the initial idea of a couple often stops being true, which presents a difficult challenge. However, couples who thrive find another idea of themselves, another story that they inhabit and are proud of. This holds true for individuals as well, as having a story about oneself that is believed by others helps navigate the world. However, knowing how to identify and change these narratives is a skill we often lack. It is crucial for both partners in a relationship to be telling the same revised story; otherwise, it can lead to dysfunction and a potential breakdown of the relationship. Changing narratives in a relationship is not about scrapping the old story entirely; it's more like building upon it, with new layers formed on top of the old ones. Conflict can arise during this process, but it is possible to reach a new understanding and inhabit a new shared story together if both partners are willing to work on it.
