Custom is King
The story tells of Darius summoning a Greek and an Indian and asking them how much they would be willing to do something unthinkable in their respective cultures. The Greek refuses to eat his parent, and the Indian is equally disgusted by the idea of burning his parent. Herodotus uses this story to emphasize the belief that everyone thinks their own customs are the best. Interestingly, Herodotus, a Greek, sees the world from a Persian perspective, suggesting that even the Greeks recognized the centrality of the Persians.
