Teams that can't argue, disagree, and debate will not make great decisions. Conflict around issues and ideas is necessary and good, but it should not devolve into backstabbing mean-spirited conflict. If ideological conflict is not addressed, it can ferment into conflict around individuals. Just being nice to each other can lead to unkindness. Conflict is a better word because it accurately represents the messy and emotional nature of healthy conflict. Healthy conflict is good, while unhealthy conflict is bad and occurs when there is no trust on a team. Trust enables conflict to be a pursuit of truth and the best possible answer.
