Tech Won't Save Us
The History of VR & Why It’s Not Going Anywhere (from 2022)
The history of VR dates back to the late 80s and early 90s when it was anticipated to revolutionize the tech industry, but it failed to gain consumer traction despite its potential applications in various fields. This pattern repeated with Second Life in the mid-2000s and with the hype around Oculus and Magic Leap in the 2010s. Despite technological advancements, VR still struggles to attract sustained user interest and engagement, resulting in it being labeled as the 'rich white kid of tech' judged on potential rather than actual results. Even with large investments from companies like Facebook (now Meta), VR continues to face a demand problem, as users find the experience boring and not essential to their daily lives. The current push towards the metaverse and partnerships with other tech giants may not guarantee VR's future success, as history suggests the challenges in making it a mainstream technology remain.
