Alcohol Consumption and Brain Degeneration

Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, such as three to four drinks per night every night, is harmful to the brain. A recent study examined the impact of low to moderate alcohol consumption on brain degeneration. The research focused on gray matter, containing neurons, and white matter, which consists of connections and fibers. The study observed over 35,000 middle-aged and older adults in the UK who consumed different alcohol levels. Even individuals consuming low to moderate amounts, like one or two drinks a day, showed signs of thinning in the neocortex and other brain regions, indicating neuron loss.
