Your Expectations Are Even More Powerful Than Your Genes

The book 'The Expectation Effect' by David Rotoso explores the power of expectations. The author found that people's expectations can have a significant impact on their physiological responses. For example, in a study on gluten intolerance, participants who didn't have a biological intolerance but believed they did experienced symptoms like diarrhea and inflammation after consuming a meal containing gluten. Another study looked at a genetic trait related to oxygen regulation. Participants who were told they had the trait performed better and showed physiological changes, such as lower lactate threshold and better oxygen upregulation, even if they didn't actually have the genetic mutation. These findings led to the conclusion that our expectations are even more powerful than our genes.
