Mobileye's view on robo taxis has evolved over the past few years. Initially, they planned to build an end-to-end robo taxi system, including self-driving technology, vehicle integration, fleet control, customer-facing teleoperation, and more. However, their focus now is on providing the self-driving system and partnering with platform providers and transportation companies for other aspects. They have partnerships with platform makers like Shafler and Holon, and a global provider for the deployment of tens of thousands of vehicles starting from 2023. They are also working with companies like Beep and the Sixth to build demand and match it with the platform providers. Mobileye will not be responsible for teleoperation, but they will provide the technological substrate for it. The platform providers and transport operating companies will handle the back office and teleoperation. Mobileye wants to concentrate on the self-driving system, which they consider a significant challenge, especially in validation.
Mobileye founder, president and CEO Amnon Shashua has proposed a new way to describe automated driving. Alex, Ed and Kirsten dig into the topic and make a few new discoveries along the way.
