Is it financially worth it to be among the first few companies that trains foundation models?

The sustainability of being the first to train foundation models and the advantage gained by training new models from that foundational model is uncertain. Understanding the rate of model development and training acceleration, as well as cost reduction, is crucial before investing a significant amount of capital. Cost reduction in model training in machine learning is currently outpacing Moore's law and DNA sequencing. The business model needs a persistent advantage that can't be surpassed by competitors, but it's unlikely that being the first to market will provide this advantage. The timing of market adoption relative to technology advancement is unpredictable, making it challenging to invest in technology.
