People are less happy when their minds are wandering than when they are focused. The content of their thoughts at a given moment is a better predictor of their happiness than their current activity. It is not necessary for people to be thinking about something unpleasant for their mind-wandering to lead to unhappiness. Even if people are thinking about pleasant things while engaged in an activity, the mismatch between their thoughts and the activity makes them feel unhappy. The study highlights that people are often not present in the moment, which is a significant source of unhappiness.
