On shoring of chip production and Ukraine war is moving Taiwan closer to China
The upcoming election in Taiwan might result in the pro-China party taking power. Taiwanese citizens are reconsidering their alliance with the US due to the situation in Ukraine and the potential risks of being an American proxy state. The war in Ukraine, which was supposed to deter Taiwan from opposing China, might actually deter Taiwan from opposing China. The US has been reducing its dependence on critical resources from China and Taiwan, which leaves Taiwanese citizens with the impression that they may no longer need to rely on the US. This situation forces rational Taiwanese citizens to hedge their bets. If the US can secure chip supplies from Europe and Mexico, the importance of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) diminishes.
