Falsifying theories is not straightforward due to background knowledge. The discovery of neutrinos showed that energy was not conserved, leading to the identification of weak nuclear interactions. Similarly, relativity revealed that some formulations of the conservation of energy were incompatible. However, there are conceptions of energy conservation compatible with general relativity. The possibility of a theory of dark energy violating the principle of conservation of energy guides theorizing about dark energy.
This is my interview with David Deutsch, Visiting Professor of physics at the Centre for Quantum Computation, the Clarendon Laboratory, Oxford University and an Honorary Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford. We discuss the constructor theory of information, some of its conjectured principles, the unification of classical and quantum information, and more.
