A typical resting heart rate for somebody very fit, like older Swedish cross-country skiers with a VO2 max test result of 35 milliliters per kilogram, is sub-60 beats per minute. This is a good number to aim for regardless of age. Resting heart rates above 60 may indicate some underlying issue or lack of fitness.
