The Stoics on Difficult People
Difficult people are seen as obstacles and impediments by the Stoics. However, they also present an opportunity to practice virtues such as patience, kindness, and generosity. The Stoics believe that we were put here for other people and we must not only tolerate them but also do good for and through them. Difficult people will challenge, frustrate, and hurt us, but this difficulty also presents an opportunity to be our best selves and practice stoicism. The Stoics caution against strong emotions such as anger and anxiety, as they do not improve the situation and often make it worse. In fact, these overwhelming passions only cause needless distress and prevent us from finding peace and stillness.
