How to Improve Memory with Scent

Scientists have discovered a method to improve memory by associating sensory stimuli with learned information. In one study, participants were exposed to a rose perfume while learning a list of words, creating a bond between the scent and the memory. During deep non-REM sleep, the rose odor was reintroduced, resulting in a 40-50% improvement in memory. Another study used auditory cues, such as the sound of a tea kettle or fire engine, paired with visual information on a computer screen. These cues were replayed during sleep, selectively enhancing the memory of specific information. While these methods show promise, caution is advised in trying to manipulate the sleeping brain, as it raises ethical questions about the extent of control we should have over such processes.
