The Different Types of Sleep

Sleep can be categorized into different phases, including slow-wave sleep (deep sleep) and REM sleep. Slow-wave sleep is difficult to wake up from and people often feel confused when aroused. REM sleep, on the other hand, is deeper and more vivid, with longer REM sleep periods occurring in the second half of the night. While slow-wave sleep is traditionally referred to as deep sleep, the intensity and depth of REM sleep challenge this classification. When awakened during REM sleep, people may report experiences that resemble wakefulness, and external stimuli can become incorporated into dreams.
