Democracy is a process where a proposition is made to benefit something that a person or group cares about, but they are not aware of everything or care about everything equally. This leads to polarization and eventually radicalization. The government process does not consider all interconnected issues or alternative solutions. Sense-making and informed decision-making are not part of the conversation. We need to think about government processes that allow for shared sense-making and the synthesis of different perspectives. The current system of trade-offs and in-group/out-group dynamics is unsustainable and can lead to catastrophic scenarios. We cannot keep having wars in the age of exponential technology. We need to study how brains integrate information from different senses and how cells in our body operate in symbiosis to inform new ways of organizing collective intelligence and adaptive capacity. The current notion of democracy, based on limited majority decision-making, leads to polarization and warfare. We need to rethink democracy to avoid these outcomes.
