Lifespan with Dr. David Sinclair

NOTE

mTOR- The Longevity Gene

There is a fundamental set of genes that controls the speed of aging. One of these genes is mTOR, which is activated by the intake of protein. However, high mTOR activity is not beneficial for longevity. Low mTOR activity, achieved through the drug rapamycin, can extend lifespan in mice, even at old age. This signal of low mTOR activity indicates tough times and the need to hunker down and survive, resulting in a longer life. The effect of rapamycin is not limited to mice, as it can also increase lifespan in yeast, flies, and worms. These findings suggest that manipulation of mTOR could tap into a universal longevity program.
