Caffeine, Adrenaline: How They Affect Memory

Ingesting caffeine before a memory task or learning can enhance mental and physical performance. Spiking adrenaline after learning greatly enhances memory retention. This practice dates back centuries and has been observed in both children and adults. The mechanism behind this enhancement is not completely understood, but deliberate cold exposure or ingesting caffeine can increase adrenaline levels. Abstaining from caffeine while learning and then consuming it afterwards significantly improves memory for the learned information. Memories are strengthened by the release of catecholamines such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine, which are sparked by surprises or increased adrenaline. The use of caffeine at the end of a learning session is a reliable way to enhance memory.
