At Shopify, every project goes through multiple phases including a proposal phase and a prototype phase. The prototype phase is time and resource constrained, with a maximum of six weeks but ideally less. The goal is to start from scratch each week and try something new. Constraints are set, such as throwing away all source code other than the unitus each day and shipping the feature the day it can be implemented in its entirety. This approach leads to the best code and highlights the importance of creative constraints in the world of creation.
