How to Sleep Better

The key insight is that one shoe size doesn't fit all when it comes to healthy sleep. There is a wide range of individual variation in terms of optimal sleep duration, which can range from six to 11 hours for adults. It is wrong to impose a specific amount of sleep for everyone. The book aims to help people define what's optimal for them. To determine if you're not getting enough sleep, you can ask yourself several questions, such as needing an alarm clock or a partner to wake up, taking a long time to wake up, relying on caffeinated and sugary drinks, showing a lack of empathy or increased frustration, and noticing that you do impulsive and unreflective things. It's important to understand your individual sleep needs and adopt behaviors that support your sleep pattern. Sleep duration and timing vary between individuals, influenced by factors like the molecular clock and exposure to light. Morning light advances the clock and makes you wake up earlier, while evening light delays the clock and makes you wake up later and go to bed later.
