The Turing Test for Chatbots
Creating a chatbot system that could fool humans into thinking it was a human in a conversation is possible without solving the AGI problem, as many conversations have already occurred and humans are not necessarily clever. However, these systems may not be able to pass a five-year-long Turing test because it is possible to teach a person of average intelligence computer programming and other skills over that time period, which may not be possible with a chatbot like GPT. Additionally, the nature of activities such as business strategy and political policy planning, which involve dealing with an ever-changing world and unexpected challenges, may be challenging for chatbots that rely on recombining previous strategies. Humans are capable of tasks that go beyond large-scale pattern matching and synthesis, but such tasks may be rare. Conversely, if a society consisted entirely of chatbots, it would remain stuck at its current level of capability and would not progress further. Overall, the discussion highlights the limitations of current chatbot systems and raises questions about what truly constitutes general intelligence.
