Persistent Problems of Teaching: Figuring Out What Pupils Need to Learn

Every teacher is faced with five persistent problems of teaching: figuring out the curriculum, conducting assessment, understanding what their pupils know, helping pupils progress, and investing attention and effort in the learning journey. While teachers in different contexts will have varied answers to these questions, there is a common cognitive architecture that is shared among all teachers. The interaction between these individual differences and the specific curriculum being taught makes professional development important. Teachers need to use their knowledge and experience to weave together answers to these questions, with input from subject specialists. Mentoring helps contextualize these ideas.
