The Benefits of Rest and Brief Naps on Learning and Memory

Rest, deep sleep, and brief naps can enhance learning and memory. Two papers have shown that brief naps can enhance the rate of learning and memory. The reconfiguration and strengthening of neural circuits occur during deep sleep and non-sleep deep rest. These bouts of sleep or rest can enhance learning and memory even if performed several hours later. It is not necessary to immediately nap or sleep after learning. The ideal protocol to optimize memory is to focus intensely on the thing you're trying to learn.
