The Problem with Social Media and Technology's Impact on Human Weaknesses

The problem with social media and technology is that it has overwhelmed and undermined human weaknesses. Technology exploits human vulnerabilities such as short-term memory, dopamine systems, reliance on stopping cues, and social approval. It hacks the limits of our heuristics for determining what is true. These exploitations lead to problems like distraction, addiction, teen depression, polarization, and the breakdown of truth. The collective effect of this digital fallout is comparable to climate change, slowly eroding the social fabric. This phenomenon is referred to as human downgrading, and it requires a global response to address its destructive impact on society.
