Character is built not in good times, but in bad times. The speaker reflects on the influence of a man named Jack Dunman, the former dean of the school. Jack showed generosity and support to the speaker during difficult times, looking the other way when the speaker couldn't pay for campus stay or tuition and even giving him money when he was broke. Through these experiences, the speaker learned the value of generosity and how it shapes character. The speaker expresses gratitude to the school and Jack for teaching him how to be resilient and carry that lesson with him throughout his life.
