The Flaw in the Mind as a Muscle Analogy

The analogy that the mind is like a muscle falls short because when we strain to learn something with our mind, we don't actually get to feel what it is to perform much better as we are trying to learn that thing. In fact, the stress and strain and the disappointment when we look at our diminished performances are actually the trigger for invoking the learning itself. The mind is not like a muscle because you don't actually get to experience the good growth that you're seeking as you're trying to learn it. Rather, everything we've been talking about today is about learning how to experience the strain of trying to learn, the agitation of trying to learn as the learning process itself. Understanding that all the stress-related experiences such as elevated heart rate, frustration, difficulty maintaining focus, actually create specific neurochemical and neural circuit conditions to invoke learning.
