The Importance of Mitosis in the Growth of Online Communities

Product market fit is not a binary thing, but a continuous process that needs to be achieved at each new level of scale in order for a company to continue growing. This can be seen with Facebook's journey from achieving product market fit within Harvard to expanding to other colleges and then to a global scale through acquisitions. Furthermore, the growth of social platforms is driven by a series of continuous optimizations punctuated by discontinuities that bring about significant changes in user behavior. Clubhouse, in particular, has extreme product market fit with one community, but in order to maintain intimate conversations and quality interactions, communities need to undergo mitosis, splitting off into smaller networks of communities. This organic growth process happens both in the real world and online, as evident in the early days of the internet with the formation of specialized forums. Therefore, for Clubhouse to succeed at the next level of scale, it is crucial for it to allow its communities to undergo mitosis and become a network of diverse communities.
