The Authority of Peter and the Apostles in Interpreting God's Word
In Matthew 16, Jesus gives Peter the power to bind and loose, which refers to the authority to interpret God's Word. This authority can be traced back to Moses giving the Levitical priests the same authority in Deuteronomy 17. Jesus not only gives this authority to Peter but also to the apostles as a group. This priestly responsibility bestowed by Jesus on the apostles is significant in understanding church government and continues to hold relevance today.
